Supreme Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II has pleaded with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to intervene in the brewing chieftaincy dispute in Nanton in order to safeguard the sustained peace in Dagbon, ABC News can report.

Ya Na Abubakari Mahama II made this request through his spokesperson during the Awukudae celebration in Manhyia Palace in the Asante Region.

Dr. Yakubu Mahama, who represented Ya Na and the Dagbon Traditional Area during the Asantehene’s Awukudae festivities in Kumasi noted that the existing peace  in Dagbon is at risk owing to the chieftaincy dispute brewing in Nanton over the successor of the former Nanton-Naa, Sulley Alhassan after his demise.

According to the spokesperson, this tension is as a result of the delayed assumption of office of the officially enskinned Nanton Na, Mahama Bawa, the former Vo Naa, by the Ya Na who has the supreme authority to enskin chiefs within the traditional council.

He, however, added that after the enskinment, chief of Zoosali, Alhaji Haruna Tia Sulemana, who was dissatisfied with Ya Na’s choice rushed to Nanton and organized thugs from various parts of Tamale; Nanton, Diare, and Gushiegu to destabilise the township and prevent the smooth entry of the new Nanton-Naa. He further stated that Alhaji Haruna Tia then proceeded to declare himself the Chief of Nanton in apparent disregard to law and custom.

In view of this, the Ya Na is pleading with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the President Akufo-Addo to intervene and resolve the matter amicably so that the existing peace in Dagbon could be safeguarded.

According to Dr. Mahama, Ya Na is experiencing sleepless nights over the issue, but however hopeful that the intervention of the Asantehene and the President with the help of the eminent chiefs who helped to restore peace in Dagbon after 16 years of protracted conflict, can resolve the issue amicably.

“We will not want to be seen as ungrateful people and undeserving of all these years of sacrifice. So we once again appeal to you and His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to correct this anomaly to bring lasting peace to Dagbon in particular and Ghana as a whole. It is only you and His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo can correct this anomaly,” Dr. Mahama Abubakar II read on behalf Ya Na Abubakari Mahama II.

Otumfuo, after hearing the request, responded that “as his spokesman was talking, he spoke about Nanton, I want to assure the Ya Na that we will discuss this and find an amicable solution to that. So we will beg of the Ya Na and the people not to create any confusion. We can still use amicable means so that we can find amicable solutions to that.”
