The wife of the Minneapolis police officer involved in the death of George Floyd has reportedly filed for divorce.
According to multiple US and international news reports, attorneys for Kellie Chauvin say she is distraught over the death of the African-American man, thereby leading to her seeking the “dissolution of her marriage” to Derek Chauvin.
Mr. Chauvin and three other officers were fired on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, in connection with the death of Floyd on Monday.
Later on Friday, May 29, 2020, Chauvin was arrested and charged in connection with the death which has prompted massive nationwide protests that have turned violent in several cities.
Even though Chauvin faces 3rd-degree murder and manslaughter charges, the other officers have not been charged with any crimes.
In a video that has since gone viral and angered the world, Chauvin was captured pinning his knee into Floyd’s neck on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill in a shop.
During his arrest, eyewitnesses say, Floyd dropped to the ground telling the officers he was claustrophobic, but they had none of that as Chauvin choked “Mr. Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds.”
Further reports also added that two minutes and 53 seconds of this was after Mr. Floyd had repeatedly stated that he could not breathe as bystanders pleaded with Chauvin to stop.
A statement released by Kellie Chauvin and her family said “she is devastated by Mr. Floyd’s death,” and added that “her utmost sympathy lies with his family, his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving.”
Crowned Mrs. Minnesota in 2018, Kellie doesn’t have any children from her current marriage.
