Former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare has described the setting up of an emergency response team by the former President John Dramani Mahama as unnecessary.

According to him, the setting up of the team smacks of excessive politicization of issues in the country and a desire by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to score political points in the crisis.

The former President announced that his party has assembled a technical team made up of experts from the various fields to collaborate with the government in combating the coronavirus pandemic.

Some of the members include former Health Minister, Alex Segbefia; Public Health Expert and Former Dean of School of Public Health, UHAS, Professor Margaret Kweku; Interdisciplinary Medicine Expert, Dr Vida Yarkong and Senior Medical Consultant and former General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr Jehu Appiah among others.

But speaking on Asempa FM, the Presidential advisor on health said the response to the COVID-19 pandemic should be devoid of party colouring to enable effective combating of the disease of which Ghana has recorded 27 cases.

Rather, he urged the former President’s team to write down their suggestions and present it to the Government’s committee instead of forming a parallel committee.

“What is it for? What exactly are they going to respond to? We should stop this politics, and politics and politics. It pains me, I become so much distressed when I see that everything in this country is politicized. If you have ideas, send it to the President, I don’t believe that the opposition leaders cannot call the President or a Minister of Health,”

“You don’t have to call Professor so, so and so, once you do that by forming such groups, you push them to political affiliations, we should stop that,” he stated.

Dr Nsiah Asare said he is confident that President Akufo-Addo, moving forward, will engage all political leaders to discuss how best Ghana can together fight against the novel coronavirus.

“I know for sure that the President will meet all political leaders…He is open to ideas, he is open to anybody who wants to talk to us, so it is not necessary to go and form another parallel group. This country is run by an Executive President,” he added.
