The West African Examination Council has suspended this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) until further notice due to the outbreak of the coronavirus in the country and other West African states.

WAEC’s new directives follows calls by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-GH) to postpone the exams since the students are more exposed the virus in school.

Heeding to the calls, the Chairman of the Council approved the proposal to reschedule 2020 WASSCE.

The examination council in a press release stated that “The negative impact of the novel and deadly COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent protocols put in place by the governments of member countries to prevent the spread of the disease have serious implications for the conduct of WASSCE for School Candidates, 2020 as agreed by the National Offices”

“The Registry hereby directs that; the WASSCE (SC) 2020 Timetable be suspended until further notice, the conduct of WASSCE (SC) 2020 be put on hold until further notice, and directives (1) and (2) will be reviewed when the health situation improves,” it read.
