Video: How the car trunk of a banker became the hub of Ghana’s finest luxury human hair company – The Hair Senta story

Beauty with intellect. That’s how many perceived her back in the day, except she was much more than a pretty face with a high IQ.

She was a bold, ambitious banker who unlike many of her colleagues, did not see her job at the bank as an end but rather, a means to a much bigger prize.

From her days as a credit analyst with one of the leading banks in Ghana, Gwyneth Gyimah Addo – Gwen, as she prefers to be called, would start a side hustle which will in some years’ time become the haven for women who sought natural hair extensions.

She doesn’t share much in common with a lot of people, except perhaps billionaire Tyler Perry, with whom she shares an interesting story of working from their car trunks.

For four years, Gwen sold hair from the trunk of her car during lunch breaks to colleagues at the bank. On weekends, she would move to salons and attend to referrals she may have gotten in the course of the week.

“ I started in 2008 and I had my first store in 2012…my office was my car trunk and it worked, you know, break time I [would] take my colleagues there and then weekends I go to salons where they come out, look at what I have but obviously, it wasn’t easy,” she recounted to Kwabena Kyenkyenhene Boateng on the Business Edition of 21 minutes with KKB.

Today, she’s the Chief Executive Officer for The Hair Senta, a Luxury Human Hair company focusing primarily on providing luxury hair extensions on both retail and wholesale level to clients all over the world.

The rather humble beginning would serve as motivation for Gwen to scale up in her own small way and that would mean clients and prospective clients would have access to her home to make purchases.

But with an increase in demand, coupled with the threat of having no privacy at all, Gwen would take her vision of building a world class brand to a whole new level by setting up shops in several parts of Ghana, of course, starting with one at East Legon in the capital, Accra.
