Embattled Chief Executive Officer of defunct gold dealership company, Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah has called on government to as a matter of urgency use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to fight the novel coronavirus.

According to him, AI and big data are the only tools that can be used to heal and save the world, so Government of Ghana must adopt and invest in AI in order to solve the pandemic that has seen 132 people infected and 3 persons confirmed dead with one patient reportedly in critical condition.

Making reference to the sharp decline of deaths in China, NAM1 noted that the Chinese government, in combating the spread of the coronavirus used robots as front liners to detect infected patients.

According to him, the procurement of AI systems developed by a Chinese tech giant Baidu, which uses cameras equipped with computer vision and infrared sensors to check the temperature of masses in public places helped the Chinese government to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

“The number of reported cases is on the decline in China currently, as socio-economic life in China as reported is near rebound, all thanks to robots at the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19 coupled with human intellects, endeavors and the installation of AI systems,” he stated.

Urging government to make use of AI with immediate effect, NAM1 entreated the Akufo-Addo-led administration to procure the Baidu AI system and further made the following recommendations to fight the pandemic.

“The AI system is capable of screening up to 200 people per minute and detects their temperature within a range of 0.5 degrees Celsius. This Artificial Intelligence flags anyone with a temperature above 37.3 degrees Celsius.”

“The resort to another AI system developed by another Chinese tech giant, Alibaba, which can detect coronavirus in chest CT scans. According to the developers, the AI system has a 96 percent accuracy. The AI was trained on data from 5000 coronavirus cases and perform the test in 20 seconds as compared to the 15 minutes it takes a human health expert to diagnose a patient. This AI also tells the difference between coronavirus and ordinary viral pneumonia. The algorithm can give a boost to the medical centers by shedding off huge workloads to ease health workers off pressure and the risk of possible infection. This system is reportedly in use in several hospitals in China.”

He believes doing this will protect citizens and preserve the socio-economic order of the country.

Ghana’s latest cases of coronavirus have increased to 132. Out of the 132 confirmed cases recorded, 78 came from travelers who are under mandatory quarantine, while the 54 cases including 3 deaths came from the regular surveillance systems.
