The Deputy General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called the bluff of the Opposition National Democratic Congress to cause the removal of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the Co-Chair of the United Nations (UN) Eminent Group of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Advocates.
According to Nana Obiri Boahen, the threat by the opposition party is one that lacks substance, describing it as “much ado about nothing.”
The NDC on Sunday at a presser along the Pra River served notice that it will petition the UN General-Secretary, António Guterres, latest by Tuesday to kick President Akufo-Addo out of his position in the UN SDGs as Co-Chair because he is “unfit” for the position.
According to the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, the President has been a failure in the fight against illegal mining in his own country, for which reason grave destruction has been caused to the environment.
“We hereby serve notice, that the NDC shall in the coming days, petition the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to revoke the appointment of President Akufo-Addo as Co-Chair of the SDG Advocates. Clearly, President Akufo-Addo has failed to show genuine commitment to the fight against illegal mining and the protection of the environment in his own backyard,” he stated.
“His corrupt government has become an active enabler and promoter of the ‘galamsey’ menace and the destruction of the environment in a way that affronts the SDGs of the United Nations. He has proven to be unfit for the prestigious position of Co-Chair of the UN SDGs Advocates, for which reason he must be removed without delay. And, we are absolutely convinced beyond doubt, that the United Nations will act in the interest of the Ghanaian people, the international community and the environment,” he claimed.
But in response to the threats and allegations by the opposition party, Nana Obiri Boahen noted that the comments are complete ‘nonsense’ and should be disregarded.
“It is much ado about nothing; I call it bunkum and balderdash. My response to their press conference that they are going to petition the UN Secretary is that I consider it to be bunkum and balderdash,” he stressed.
