Some Police officers in the Konongo Divisional Police Command have allegedly assaulted two residents of Ashanti Akyem Adomfeh in the Asante Akim South Municipality of Ashanti Region leading to the death of one, ABC News can report.

The deceased, whose name is still unknown, is said to be a popular driver of about 33 years, ABC News can report.

According to an eyewitness account by the Assemblyman of the area, Samuel Kofi Boadu the police officers, numbering seven, stormed the area in the late hours of Tuesday, October 15 for a patrol search.

In his narration, Mr Boadu indicated that after an unsuccessful visit to two areas in the vicinity, the police personnel met and arrested two young men without reason, cut one with a machete when he questioned the motive of the arrest and managed to forcefully push the two into their patrol car, after firing about eight (8) warning shots to disperse the youth who had gathered to confront them.

“It was police personnel who were on patrol so they went to one Mr. Kankam and he wasn’t there so they just broke the door and entered into the room and search for everything there. Actually, they didn’t get anything there, thereafter, they also went to one Yaayaa Grushie, she’s a seller of drinks, Akpeteshie, beer, and other drinks, they didn’t get anything so when they were returning from that girl’s business premises, they met two guys on the street and they just grabbed them, and one of was crying amongst them that what have I done so far and in attempt of explaining his position, one of the police personnel went to the patrol car and took a cutlass and cut the back very deeply so after cutting the person, those around there, the youth started approaching the police personnel and on realizing that the mob was increasing, they started firing warning shots, they gave about around seven-eight shots so the youth were afraid to approach them and they took the victims into the car and sped off” he divulged.

The Assemblyman, in an interview with Starr FM, added that, “I didn’t end it there, I just called the police commander, Mr. Anyani, he’s the commander in Asante-Akyem South and he told me that he has not deployed any policeman to come to the area so he also went ahead to call the Konongo divisional commander because the Patrol car had the inscription ‘Konongo-Effiduase Patrol”

According to Mr. Boadu, the Assembly had a tough time calming the youth of the area who witnessed the chilling incident.

Confirming the news, the District Police Commander, Superintendent Anyani Andrew, indicated that investigations have begun into the incident but was quick to disown the policemen suggesting that they are not under his watch.

“I got the information yesterday at around 10 pm. Some of  the community members from Adompe called me to that they had some policemen in the community and they were on a patrol duty when that incident happened and they arrested two people from the community and took them away but when they were taking them away, from the beginning, they didn’t actually know what the two guys did which resulted in their arrest so it was later that I had to go to the community around 10:30 pm to find out and when I got there they told me that is is true that people came there, some were in uniforms, others were not in uniform, and then they started firing within the community when they were about arresting some people and there was some sort of resist, so when I got the information, I tried to contact the divisional commander that this was what had happened and he also says he was going to conduct his investigation find out to see what happened.”

“So it ended there and this morning I was called from the community, that the two men who were arrested yesterday in the night, one had passed on this morning so I went to morgue with the MCE here and we actually saw that one of those arrestees was actually lying in the morgue lifeless so we went to the community to meet the chiefs and the people of the community, so the long and short of it is that there was a whole lot of agitation but there was a police presence, there was an arrest, and this morning one has passed on, that is true” he stated.

According to sister of the deceased, Abena Gyamfi, their relative had been butchered beyond recognition when they reached the hospital where he was.

“The same evening, we went to the Dwaso commander to ask if he had commissioned any such thing and he says he has no idea so we went to several other police stations and arrived at Konongo. He was with one other person called Kwame Boateng who is behind bars now, we asked where my brother was and he says he was taken to the hospital. So my uncle and I rushed to the hospital only to be told that my brother had passed. He so many cuts all over his body, it was so bad that his neck and his stomach and his entire body had been bandaged, my brother has been axed to death. Now the police say they can’t identify those officers who were at the post when this incidence happened” she said.

Following the altercation between the police and the two individuals, the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Alexander Frimpong has held a meeting with Chiefs, Assembly members, and the police to find out the root causes and the way forward.
