Records from the Motor Traffic & Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service indicate the between between January and March 2021, there have been more road accidents deaths than total Covid-19 deaths since March 2020.
Per the statistics, Ghana recorded 771 road accident deaths in the first three months of the year, meanwhile, at the last count, Covid-19 deaths from March last year till date stood at 752.
As of the April 3, 2021, the Ghana Health Service put the mortality rate from the virus at 752, a little lower than the road accident deaths.
The 2021 road accident deaths represent a 29.58% increase from the same period in 2020.
Meanwhile, another 4,700 road accidents victims are said to have sustained various degrees of injury over the period.
Over the period under review, there have been 4,009 road accidents involving 2,476 commercial vehicles and 2,771 private vehicles and 1,583 motorcycles.
Regional Breakdown
The Ashanti Region tops the chat with 171 deaths and 1,064 persons injured. The Greater-Accra Region followed with 146 deaths and 1,017 injuries, followed by the Easter Region, with 127 deaths and 732 injuries.
Central, Savannah, Bono and Upper East Regions follow in that respective order, while the North East Region recorded the lowest number of death – 3 – over the same period.
