Former President Jerry John Rawlings is leading a delegation appointed by President Akufo-Addo to the funeral of the former President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe.
A statement sighted by ABC News, released by the Communications Directorate of the Jubilee House indicated that, the delegation led by the first President of the Fourth Republic, Jerry John Rawlings, also includes a representative of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and a relative of late Sally Mugabe, first wife of Robert Mugabe.
African Heads of State and Envoys are gathering in Harare to attend a state funeral for Robert Mugabe, whose burial, according to information gathered by ABC News has been delayed for at least a month until a special mausoleum is built for his remains.
The funeral service for Zimbabwe’s founding president, who died last week in Singapore aged 95, will take place at the national sports stadium in the capital, Harare, after an announcement by his family and Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, that his burial will not take place until his tomb has been built at the National Heroes Acre Monument.
At least 10 African leaders, including South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, and several former presidents are expected to attend the ceremony at the 60, 000-capacity stadium.
The stated sighted by ABC News declared that “The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has dispatched a Government delegation to represent Ghana at the funeral in Harare, Zimbabwe. on Saturday 14 September 2019, of the late Robert Mugabe, First President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, whose first wife was a Ghanaian, the late well-known nationalist, Sally Mugabe, nee Hayfron.”
“The delegation is led by the 1st President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings, and includes the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Charles Owiredu; a nephew of the late Sally Mugabe, Mr. Queesy Ninsin-lmbeah; and officials of the Foreign Ministry” the statement noted.
