The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has downplayed the importance of the selection of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for John Dramani Mahama as far as the electoral fortunes of the NDC is concerned.
The academician and the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast was on Monday, July 6, 2020 unanimously endorsed by the National Executive Committee of the NDC following her nomination by the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
At a press conference organized few hours after the endorsement of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as running mate, the governing NPP congratulated her but was quick to add that she was only selected because other bigwigs such as Dr. Kwabena Duffour and Prof. Kwesi Botchway turned down the offer since they do not want to be on a losing side with Mr. Mahama.
According to the National Communications Director of the NPP, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah who addressed the press, since Professor Opoku-Agyemang is not new to Ghana’s politics, a cursory look at her track record indicates that she has nothing new to turn things around for the NDC.
Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, the MP for Adenta noted that the academician, having served as Education Minister in the erstwhile Mahama administration, brought untold hardships to teachers, lecturers, and students among others.
Citing cases to buttress his point, the NPP Communications Director said during her tenure as a Minister for Education, Prof. Opoku-Agyeman superintended over the cancellation of book and research allowances for lecturers, cancellation of nursing training allowance, shortage of teaching and learning materials as common as chalk among others.
With this track record, the NPP concluded that there is nothing new she can offer to the NDC to brighten their chances in the December polls, adding that her selection is a clear indication of the fundamental problem with the NDC.
“We extend our congratulations to Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang on her selection. Having congratulated her, we believe it is important to remind all of us what Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang brings nothing to the John Mahama ticket,” Buabeng Asamoah said at the press conference.
He further stated that “unfortunately, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang hardly meets the expectations of someone who has a track record of fighting for women and their welfare. How can a woman who hates her fellow women to the extent that she advocated for the release of the jailed trio (Montie 3) so that they could rape and kill her fellow women be given such as responsibility?”
Yaw Buabeng Asamoah therefore concluded that the selection of the Prof. Opoku-Agyemang who has a very bad track record in public office is an indication that John Mahama and the NDC “do not take the Ghanaian electorate seriously. It is our view that after having looked so long and wide, the NDC still has a problem.”
