The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched investigations into a reported case of armed robbery and assassination attempt on the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Kennedy Kankam, on Saturday, ABC News can report.

According to reports, three masked men besieged the residence of the legislator, Saturday, and robbed him and his family of their valuables.

The gunmen reportedly made away with laptops, phones, TV set and an unspecified amount of money.

They are reported to have also bolted with the MP’s Toyota Land Cruiser but later abandoned it around Kwadaso, a suburb of Kumasi.

The Police have since retrieved the vehicle as part of its investigations after the MP made a formal complaint to the them.

Confirming the incident, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Godwin Ahianyo said the MP, in his caution statement, said the armed men who were at his residence for about three hours, subjected him and his family to inhumane treatment.

The MP, he said, added that the gunmen threatened to terminate his life and subjected him to all manner of torture.

ASP Ahianyo said the Police are looking into the claim of assassination attempt although current investigations are focused mainly on the robbery.

He further gave an assurance that the police are working hard to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.

“We are taking some leads and we hope and pray that very soon we will be able to get the perpetrators arrested. Some CID men were at his residence to pick some leads. We are also pleading with the public to help us by way of giving us information.”

“We are assuring the general public that in due time we will get the perpetrators who committed this act arrested and made to the face the full rigors of the law,” he said.
