Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has revealed that 245 Ghanaian deportees, mostly illegal migrants, are expected to arrive in the country from Kuwait on Saturday, May 23, 2020.
This was announced by the Minister at a routine press briefing on Friday, May 22, 2020.
Addressing the press, the minister explained that the group, which will be arriving on a chartered flight, will be put under a 14-day mandatory quarantine in compliance with Ghana’s COVID-19 protocols.
The minister said deportees who test positive for COVID-19 will be treated at the government’s expense and would only be discharged after a second negative test.
The information minister said “the government of Ghana has granted a special permit for the admission of the said deportees to Ghana” adding that the deportees, however, will not go scot-free as they would remain in custody in line with the country’s immigration laws.
“It is after this investigation that a case by case determination would be made on the status and further handling of each deported,” he said.
