Director of Elections of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has described the former President John Dramani Mahama as a threat to the NPP’s chances of winning the 2020 elections.
According to Mr. Afriyie Ankrah, some leading members of the NPP sought to discourage the former President from contesting as a flagbearer of the NDC because of the threat the former President poses to them.
“They went on an attack of the former President Mahama, who they know is a threat to them. You recall before the NDC primaries, NPP gurus were advising him not to contest. Hearts and Kotoko are going to play a match and the team on the other side is saying that don’t use this goalkeeper, have you heard it before? Because they know he is a threat to their chances so they spent all their time on insults and attacks and everything, it won’t amount to anything,” he said.
New voters’ register may be NPP’s doom in 2020 – Kofi Bentil
The NDC at a press conference last week, among others accused the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) of conniving to rig the December election in favour of the NPP.
Responding to the allegations, the NPP in a counter-press conference indicated that they do not need either the EC or the NIA to help them win the 2020 polls because Ghanaians have seen their hard work since assuming the reins of power in 2017.
But Mr. Afriyie Ankrah says the NPP’s track record does not support this claim.
“And then the most laughable aspect of it is they claim they don’t need the NIA and they don’t need the EC to win an election, really? When in a common Ayawaso by-election you attempted to commit murder. When somebody points an AK47 at you and shot, the luck is that the gun didn’t enter the head, they were going to kill for a by-election and you tell us that you don’t need anybody to win an election, the record of their party and their government does not resonate with that claim they are making,” he alleged.
