The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman, has stated that Ghana’s doors are open to all and sundry as the country marks the ‘Year of Return’, ABC News can report

His comments are in response to concerns raised by a section of the public over the calibre of people trooping into the country this festive season to mark the ‘Year of Return’ following social media posts by some porn stars indicating they will be travelling to Ghana to partake in the initiative.

Popular American porn star, Byron Long, is one of such porn stars who has indicated he will be heading to Ghana this December 2019 as part of the ‘Year of Return’ campaign.

A photo of him with the flag of Ghana stating his intention to join other African Americans for the program on social media attracted diverse reactions.

But according to the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, there is nothing wrong with porn stars visiting Ghana for the ‘Year of Return’.

Speaking in an interview with ABC News, Akwasi Agyeman said though he understands the argument some people make, he is not in a position to make moral judgements as he sees nothing wrong with it.

”As I sit here I can’t be a judge on who to come to Ghana because he is this or that. So far as they apply for a visa, they get the visa and they come into the country and are law-abiding, who I’m I to say they should not come. So to that extent, people like Cardi B and I don’t even know who the porn star is, I don’t know him but I have also seen the story that says somebody is coming who is porn star. Is pornography legal where he is coming from? If it is and he comes to Ghana and visits the castle or visits a place, what is wrong with that?” he quizzed.

He opined that his outfit is collaborating with security agencies to track the activities of all persons coming into the country. Hence, there is no cause for alarm.

”Once we open up our country for tourism, all kinds of people will come in. Even the risk of people with dodgy characters, potential terrorists and all of them are going to look at Ghana as a destination and that is why we are working closely with the immigration, national security and the police service to make sure that at least data is collected and we can track. That is as far as my mandate goes. I don’t make moral judgements in these matters. Personally I would not be there, but I am not here to serve my personal interest. I am here to serve the state and I don’t make moral judgements,” he said.

Mr. Agyeman averred that ”I undertake where you are coming from but I believe if we want to take tourism to where we want to take it to, we need to rather work on our structures so that we are able to track people from boarding and all their activities. If it is not an illegal activity, why not?”

Byron Long, Adult film actor

The “Year of Return, Ghana 2019” is a major landmark spiritual and birth-right journey inviting the Global African family, home and abroad, to mark 400 years of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in Jamestown, Virginia initiated by President Akufo-Addo

The ‘Year of Return’ initiative has seen lots of African-Americans in the diaspora visit Ghana to experience and learn about their roots from Africa.

The ‘Year of Return’ initiative has seen popular individuals like Steve Harvey, TI,  Cardi B, Samuel L. Jackson and Noami Campbell among others visiting Ghana.
