The Electoral Commission of Ghana has disclosed that, the new electoral roll still has foreigners and minors on it.

Addressing the media, Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa stated that, an internal assessment of the register after its compilation unearthed the loophole, but is hopeful the Commission will clean up the register before the December polls.

“We are aware that a number of minors have found their way onto the register and we are confident that the challenge process initiated at all districts throughout the country will help deal with this illegality and rid the register of those who do not deserve to be there,” she said at the ‘Let the Citizens Know’ forum.

The Commission also noted that 16.9 million persons has so far registered with Greater Accra Region having the most registered voters of 3.5 million persons.

She however added that the figures are expected to drop after the deduplication and adjudication.

“The process of deduplication and adjudication, which are currently going will flag multiple registrations in the system, additionally, the challenge system put in place during the registration and exhibition exercise will further flag unqualified voters on the register,” Jean Mensa noted.

Mrs Mensa further expressed optimism that the upcoming processes “will contribute to the cleaning of the register and ensure its integrity and credibility ahead of the 2020 election.”

The Electoral Commission finalized the voter’s register compilation with a two-day mop-up exercise which ended on August 9, 2020.
