Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has described the National Democratic Congress’s continues opposition to the compilation of a new Voters’ Register as an attempt to condition the minds of their supporters to not accept the outcome of the 2020 elections.

Mr Afenyo-Markin claimed that the various allegations peddled by the NDC over the new register without any proof suggest the party’s awareness that it may likely lose the 2020 election, hence their attempt to condition the minds of their supporters.

Addressing a news conference on Thursday, Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo claimed the EC is conspiring with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to rig the 2020 general election for President Akufo-Addo and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government.

This claim has been unanimously rubbished by the mentioned parties, including the NIA which said in a statement Friday, that the Authority is not part of the election management architecture in Ghana and voting and elections do not form part of its mandate and therefore has no role in any alleged ‘imaginary’ conspiracy.

Reacting to the NDC’s claim on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Afenyo-Markin said without proof, the NDC’s claim is unacceptable and can only be explained as a means to poison the minds of their supporters to reject the outcome of the 2020 election.

“Today the NDC is alleging conspiracy and I’m saying that if you’re making an absolute submission, that look, these are the challenges we have with the EC, we want to share with all political parties, that is fair enough, that is a good point after all the EC cannot have a perfect system but if you say that those inefficiencies, those irregularities or those challenges you have identified are as a result of a conspiracy, then I take you on.

“When NIA was in Winneba, the faulty machines, I called the officer in charge of Central Region, I was always on him, for the delays and all that, that is a general concern, I agree with you, but if you have those challenges, raise them. Don’t get up and say that we suspect or we think that there is a conspiracy, that one is unacceptable. If you are making that statement, then I’m also going to tell you that this is a political statement aimed at poisoning the minds of your supporters not to accept the outcome of 2020 elections, which you know you are going to lose,” he indicated.
