The host of Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana show, Paul Adom-Otchere has said that the choice of Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as running mate for John Dramani Mahama has brought the NDC presidential ticket to the level of the President Nana Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia ticket.
He said John Mahama made an “excellent choice” of a running mate by ticking the “gender box” for the first time in the country’s political history, adding that if the NDC drives the it well “they can win” the December 7 elections.
He was however quick to mention that the pair of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia is equally a ticket that can win the forthcoming elections.
Speaking in an interview on Starr FM monitored by ABC News, Mr Adom-Otchere noted the former President Mahama surprised everyone by ticking the “gender box” adding that “depending on how they drive it, they could turn it into a victorious ticket.”
He argued that unlike former President Jerry John Rawlings, who was a “star candidate”. John Mahama is not because he has been tried and test before, so his choice of a running mate was going to be very critical to his chances in the coming elections.
The Good Evening Ghana host believes, putting Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang on the NDC presidential ticket, has opened the race as both the NPP and NDC tickets stand the chance of winning the December 7 elections.
“The choice he made is excellent because it is a surprise choice. And in politics the surprise element is key. The ticket could be a winning ticket just as Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia is,” he said.
Adom-Otchere described himself as an a-political person who has believed in Nana Akufo-Addo becoming president since 2008 and still believes he should have won the 2008 and 2012 elections.
“I don’t belong to any party yet but I believe in Nana Addo – maybe I would consider joining a party soon because they say you need a party to have a voice,” he said.
Commenting on the inaugural address of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, Mr Adom-Otchere said it was great and inspiring.
“The address was great by and large. It is gratifying that when we are selecting people for positions, both parties select people who know the job, unlike in the past where people who did not have the requisite qualification were selected for political offices,” he stated.
