The Minister for Special Development Initiative, Mavis Hawa Koomson has admitted to firing a warning shots at a registration centre in her constituency on Monday, July 20, 2020.
An otherwise peaceful exercise at the Step to Christ registration centre in the Awutu Senya East constituency took a different turn when some armed men numbering at least 15, stormed the area and tried to prevent some prospective voters from registering.
The ensuing melee saw gunshots being fired and the burning of three motorbikes belonging to residents.
The incident is said to have been triggered after the governing NPP accused the NDC of busing people to register, leading to the MP for the area, Hawa Koomson firing the gunshot in a bid to prevent the said foreigners from registering.
“I can’t sit and watch people who are not from the constituency register and vote at Kasoa so I decided to go to the polling center to ensure foreigners don’t register…I took men to the center, none of my men had a weapon, I fired the warning shot myself” she said.
Officials of the Electoral Commission after the altercation took to their heels bringing the ongoing exercise to an abrupt end.
Four people have since been arrested in connection with the shooting incident.
