Flag-bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has been on a redemption tour across the country, preaching to Ghanaians about the need to reconsider him as President as the 2020 elections loom large.
According to the former president, he is on a rescue mission since Ghanaians are going through unbearable hardships under the Akufo-Addo-led government. Mr. Mahama says that he has learned his lessons after losing the 2016 presidential elections.
At a meeting held with members of the NDC in the United Kingdom, the former president pointed out that he holds the keys to Ghana’s economic wellbeing and that he is ready to build the best of foundations aimed at catapulting the economy to an enviable pedestal.
Mr. Mahama, by inference, makes the point that he is the Messiah to salvage Ghanaians from the hardships he claims the Akufo-Addo administration has plunged them into. To him, Ghanaians are in economic servitude and he happens to be the only person with the magic wand to rescue it.
However, when these melodic songs being chorused are juxtaposed with his stewardship between 2009 and 2016, this messianic posturing of the former president cannot stand the test of truth.
As the President of the Republic, Mr. Mahama promised to build 200 community senior high schools within four years. At the end of the fourth year, only 27 had been built and those were the World Bank-funded projects. The ones to be financed by the state were never built.
Former President Mahama has between the decision to school Ghanaian children at the expense of the taxpayer. Over 40 advertisements were funded to dissuade Ghanaians from embracing the Free Senior High School concept. This messiah promises to cancel this pro-poor policy introduced by President Akufo-Addo.
In place of Akufo-Addo’s Free Senior High School policy, the then Mahama government rolled out what they termed as the Free Progressive Free Senior High School. Under the policy, students who were covered were entitled to GHS38 cedis for their upkeep but this money was never paid.
To the extent that subventions for specialized institutions like the schools for the deaf and disabled were never paid under Mahama, a messiah coming in his shape would serve a purpose other than what he is preaching to us.
When the good people of Ghana rejected him and his NDC at the polls, Mr. Mahama would go ahead to gift 80% of Ghana’s bauxite deposits which are estimated to yield $400 billion to the country. His messianic tendencies lie in ensuring that this botched deal is given back to his brother, Ibrahim Mahama.
Ghana’s economy was run aground by the Mahama administration so much so that they had to hand over the keys to the IMF to manage the economy after their infamous meeting at Senchi. Mahama and his economic management team could not manage the economy and sought the help of the IMF. How can such a leader tout himself as the Messiah to rescue Ghanaians from hardships?
The Messiah left the growth rate at 3.7%, interest rate at 25.5% and an inflation figure of 15.4% in 2016. The man (Akufo-Addo) he claims to be performing abysmally has brought the growth rate to 6.3% as of 2018, 16% interest rate and an inflation rate of 7.6%.
Looking at these figures, coupled with the numerous failed promises of the NDC under Mahama, one cannot help but conclude that John Dramani Mahama is a holy serpent trying to worm his way back to power to cause more harm than he did.Like6:23 am
