Preliminary investigations by the Ghana Police Service into the murder of a tenant by his landlord last Sunday has revealed that Victor Stephen Nana Kankam shot Spark Benjamine dead over a woman.
The deceased, a budding musician, was allegedly shot multiple times at close range by the landlord in a heated argument for refusing to vacate the Ofankor-based apartment when his rent was due.
The action of the suspect according to police was triggered by a misguided feeling of resentfulness after a woman-related agreement with the deceased went bad.
Nana Kankam, who is now coming across as a womanizer is said to have reached a deal with Benjamine to connect him to a lady who happens to be his(Benjamine) friend and as payback, have his rent period extended by a year.
But Benjamine, after carrying out the task, allegedly conspired with the said lady to milk the landlord dry.
The landlord, upon sensing the whole picture, out of anguish and fury retracted his promise to extend Benjamine’s rent and warned him to pack out of the house on Sunday, May 24, 2020 the original expiration date of his rent.
A good number of people, after the incidence have questioned the sanity of the suspect.
But, Mile Seven District Police Commander, DSP George Asare who disclosed the latest development in an interview with Peace FM on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 indicated that Nana Kankam is sound.
“Information we received, which we are yet to authenticate, suggests that the landlord who is said to be a womanizer contracted the tenant to serve as a ‘betweener’ to win a lady for him in exchange for an extension of his rent period by a year.”
“But the lady and tenant ended up milking him dry. So he later rescinded his decision to extend the rent period and enjoined him to vacate the apartment on the 24th of May. He went on to threaten him that if he (the tenant) refused to hand over his (the landlord) keys to him (the landlord) he will see,” he narrated.
“And so looking at what has happened, there appears to be an iota of truth in this account. But we have not fully confirmed that because we need to get the statements of all these witnesses. It’s going to be problematic if we don’t ascertain what had happened earlier between them,” DSP Asare continued.
He was quick to add that “my conversation with him shows he is very sane and so he deliberately set out to kill the person.”
Meanwhile, Nana Kankam, according to the police commander has justified his action based on self-defence after a threat by the deceased during an earlier argument.
“He said they had an argument some time ago where the gentleman threatened him. He said he was ‘asked to wait and see what will happen to him.’ That is why he took the gun along as self-defence because of the previous threat.,” the Commander narrated.
“In another breath, he said the friends of the victim are weed smokers and so he had to prepare himself for any surprise. If you put all that he said together, they don’t add up,” DSP Asare said.
The landlord, as it stands now is still in police custody assisting with investigations.
