Espanyol has had difficulties in finding their rhythm this season, parting ways with three managers, Abelardo Fernandez last to be sacked.
Real Madrid is now only six wins or five wins and a draw away from lifting the La Liga title.
Madrid top the table with 71 points above Barcelona, who have 69 points.
