“Incompetent” local manufacturers lobbying for reversal of benchmark values – Dr. Joseph Obeng

President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association, GUTA, Dr. Joseph Obeng says incompetent local industries are the ones lobbying government to reverse the benchmark values regime at the ports.

This claim from the President of GUTA comes after rumours spread that government is reversing the benchmark values at the port starting Monday, November 15, 2021.

But the GRA in a quick statement debunked the rumours claiming the proposal has not received a policy approval from government hence the public should disregard the information making rounds in the media.

Benchmark Values: Purported review circulating on social media yet to receive approval from government – GRA

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Okay FM monitored by ABC News, Dr. Joseph Obeng disclosed that he cannot fathom why some industries in the country are bent on seeing the withdrawal of a policy he describes as very beneficial to the trading community.

According to the President of GUTA, it is evident that these local manufacturing companies calling for the abolishment of the benchmark values are industries whose products cannot compete with their foreign competitors’ product imported into the country due their to their inefficiencies.

He added that there are other competent manufacturing companies whose products are able to compete with their foreign competitors product hence not calling for a reversal of the policy.

“There are a lot of manufacturing companies in Ghana whose products are able to compete with similar products imported into the country. When you import the foreign ones, you can’t even sell. These companies are very good,” Dr. Joseph Obeng opined.

He added that, “those who are not able to properly manage their industries to compete with their foreign counterparts are the ones behind this call lobbying for government to reverse the benchmark policy.”

He therefore stressed that the trading community is not going to accept the reversal of the policy hence government should take note.
