Government’s Community Mining Schemes expected to create over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs – Mireku Duker

Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker has disclosed that 6 Community Mining Schemes (CMS) launched by government is projected to create over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs in the country’s small scale mining sector.

The deputy minister made this announcement on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at a Press Conference to update Ghanaians on the fight against illegal mining.

Addressing the media, George Mireku Duker explained that the Community Mining Scheme is an alternative initiative by the government to help manage small scale mining. He stated that the CMS is also to provide livelihood for members in mining communities, promote sustainable and responsible mining and ultimately halt illegal mining.

According to him, the government has so far launched 6 Community Mining Schemes in various parts of the country. These communities, the minister said are Mbampehia and Kwabre Nuba in the Western Region, Adukrom in the Ashanti Region and Akyim Abaam in the Eastern Region.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as I speak to you this morning, a total of 6 community mining schemes have been launched,” he disclosed.

He further stated that a new scheme is set to be launched in Tepa in the coming days by the sector minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor.

This already launched six schemes, the minister told the media, is specifically projected to create 10,300 direct jobs and 21,000 indirect jobs.

In order to ensure that the miners comply with the rules and regulations to ensure sustainable mining, George Mireku Duker indicated that a Small Scale and Community Mining Operational Manual has been developed to regulate their activities.
