Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has clarified that persons who owe water bills will still enjoy the President’s free water for all programme for the next three months contrary to claims by the head of the Ghana Water Company Limited that such persons will not be entitled to the intervention programme.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Dr. Braimah in a radio interview on Monday mentioned that persons owing bills as well as those whose lines have been disconnected from the national grid due to the non-payment of bills will be exempted from enjoying the President’s announced ‘free water for all’ policy.
But speaking at the Ministry of Information’s COVID-19 periodic update Tuesday morning, Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah debunked the claims emphasizing that irrespective of the arrears owed, every citizen will have access to water for free.
She further explained that the debts owed will be put on hold during the three months period but will be revisited after the period.
“Those who owe [water bills] will enjoy the president’s water relief for the next three months,” the Minister for Water stressed.
She explained further that an alternative arrangement will be made by the ministry to supply those disconnected with water indicating that all disconnected cases will be considered on merit since many disconnection cases are as a result of illegal connections.
