The family of the late Francis Zabanga, the man who shot and killed 52-year-old Kwame Amoah in a road rage at Ayeduase in Kumasi says it is untrue that the suspect shot and killed himself as police and eyewitnesses said.

The sister of Francis, who mentioned her name as Lydia, said they have seen a video footage in which one plane clothed police officer called “Charles” shot Francis at the scene of the road rage.

It would be recalled that on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, 31-year-old Francis Zabanga and 52-year-old Kwame Amoah, a painter were engaged in a road rage, during which the latter allegedly slapped the former and the former retaliated.

As the rage continued, Francis was said to have entered his car, brought out a foreign pistol with 60 rounds of ammunition and shot Kwame three times in the lower abdomen and then shot himself in the head, fearing mob attack.

Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Godwin Ahianyo confirmed the incident to journalists, saying that, to avoid mob attack, Zabanga drove his car to the nearest Access Bank branch, but the mob chased him there and he shot himself in the head to avoid being beaten to death.

Both Zabanga and Kwame Amoah we sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where both of them were later pronounced dead.

But since the death of the two, a new video has come out, in which a plane-clothed police officer was seen shooting more than once in the direction of Francis Zabanga.

It is on the basis of that video, that the family of the deceased claim the police killed Francis and it is never true that he shot himself in the head as the police claimed earlier.

According to Lydia, Francis’ sister, her brother was an American citizens who was on holiday to Ghana, adding that he was on his way to the VIP bus station to get a professional driver to drive him in his own car to Accra and back when the sad incident happened.

She said her brother may have been angered by the incident to the point of Kwame three times, as has been reported, but after doing so, he sat in his car and called the police himself.

“Why would he call the police if he wanted to kill himself,” she queried. “It is never true – it  was the police man called Charles who shot him as we all saw in the video, and the police made up the story that he shot himself in the head.”

Lydia said the sad part of the incident was when the police left him to die even though he gave them an indication that he was not dead, adding that a young man who claimed he knew Francis was also arrested by the police and they don’t know where he is now.

According to Lydia, Francis was a good person and very generous to everyone in the family and even his friends, adding that he is not a gangster or a criminal as people are trying to make him look.

She said the family has nothing to say to the police but they believe the law will take its course and Francis will get justice because “even though he shot someone, he deserved to live for the law to take its course – he didn’t deserve to die in this manner.”
