Electoral Commission director dies few days to Election 2020

Barely a week to the December 7, 2020 polls, the Asunafo North Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission (EC)...

The Electoral Commission (EC) has debunked claims that the names of more than 60 percent of security officers intended to participate in the special voting exercise are missing from their register.

The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr Serebour Quarcoo, indicates that no such information has come to the EC’s attention and believes the information is false.

“I don’t think it is true,” he said in an interview on Citi FM.

A Security analyst, Adam Bonaa first raised the concerns on Wednesday saying that over 60 percent of the security personnel being deployed for election 2020 duties do not have their names in the special voting list.

Mr. Bonaa did not provide evidence of the claim although he said he had received information from various security agencies.

“I gathered information from most of these security agencies after interacting with them to understand the severity of the situation. It will surprise you that some institutions have 99% of some departments who are not finding their names in the special voting register,” said

According to Adam Bonaa, the security personnel excluded from the special voters’ list are  getting disenfranchised and that is going to be problematic because there seems to be tension among the personnel because it is not just the rank and file but it includes senior officers as well.

But Dr. Quarcoe has cast doubt on the information.

“I don’t know where he got his figures. We have 109,552 people on the special voters’ list and this list includes the media and the security services so how many security services people do we have there?” he quizzed.

He indicated that the Commission has already compiled the list of special voters and it is very unlikely that such omissions or additions will occur.

He said, “by law, you cannot add to the list 42 days to an election, so as things are now we can’t do anything.”
