The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the government of losing the fight against the novel coronavirus, citing the death of some government officials from Covid-19 as a reason.

Currently, Ghana’s COVID-19 case count stands at 24,518 with 139 deaths, include Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, who was then Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission.

Meanwhile, some 20,187 patients have either recovered or have been discharged, leaving the active cases at 4,192.

The NDC noted that the weight of the country’s “astronomically high and ever-increasing” case count is collapsing the already weak public health system, blaming what it called the “careless and directionless leadership” of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking at presser in Accra Monday, the National Communications Officer for the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi indicated that the COVID-19 infections and its attendant deaths among high government officials and its party is evidence of hopelessness in the fight against the pandemic.

“The alarming COVID-19 infections among top NPP government officials, some of whom have died don’t inspire any confidence in the ordinary man on the street that this fight is anywhere near being won.

“As you may be aware, our health minister, Kweku Agyeman-Manu; the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo; the Forestry Commission CEO, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, aka Sir John (may God bless his soul); the Takoradi Mayor, another sad casualty are among officials who have either battled or are battling or have succumbed to the deadly virus in the last few months…

“This phenomenon clearly bares out the assertion that our COVID-19 situation is worsening and indeed our COVID-19 fight is failing,” he stated.

The opposition party is of a strong conviction that Ghana would have been in a far better situation if the government had been proactive in guarding against the virus, including the timely closure of the country’s borders.

“President Akufo-Addo’s refusal to close our borders and airport as well as adopt containment measures on time is the main reason why we find ourselves in this severe and alarming COVID-19 malice,” Sammy Gyamfi alleged.

“This view is grounded by the high number of imported cases that precipitated the astronomical community spread of the virus across the country due to the lack of implementation of any proper containment measures right from the outset.

“It will be recalled that President Akufo-Addo ignored all calls for him to close our borders and airports from health professionals, the NDC and other citizens of this country and rather went frolicking in Europe at a time the Coronavirus was ravaging several Eurpean and Western nations,” he added.
