South Africa has recorded its first neonatal coronavirus death after a two-day-old baby succumbed to the disease on Wednesday, May 20, 2020.
According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the child is one of 27 people who have died from the coronavirus, taking the country’s death toll to 339.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told the BBC the premature baby had lung problems and required ventilation immediately after birth.
“The mother had tested positive for COVID-19 and the child subsequently tested positive for COVID-19 as well. It is important to appreciate the complexities of the underlying condition of prematurity,” he said on Wednesday.
South Africa still leads the African continent in terms of coronavirus cases with its infections standing at 18,003 out of the 5,090,642 infections worldwide.
