Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Reverend Bonaventure Kwofie has directed all Catholic churches within the Region to resume Sunday masses following the easing of restrictions by President Akufo-Addo.

He also directed the Catholic Churches can only organise a maximum of 3 services in a day with a minimum of 1-hour interval between services.

This, he indicated, is to allow for cleaning and disinfection of the church premises before the next mass takes place.

The Archbishop of Accra explained that all Church services should adhere to the government’s stipulated time of 1 hour with maximum 100 people present.

Priests have been given permission as part of the directives to organise a maximum of 2 church services within the week.

Despite stating that a maximum of three Masses can be held in a day, the Archbishop has given permission for Church services to be held concurrently at different venues within the same premises, in adherence to all health and safety protocols and with reverence required.

In a statement issued Thursday, the Archbishop said, “For Sunday Masses, there will be one-hour duration between one Mass and the other to allow the disinfection of pews and chairs before the next Mass. Each Mass is to last not more than an hour. Sunday School/ Children Services are suspended during this period.

“Also, each priest has my permission to organise two Masses on weekdays and three Masses on Sundays (cf. Canon 905). Masses can be celebrated concurrently in the church, at the grotto or in the parish hall at any given time. I entreat all Pastors to ensure that places outside the church where the Eucharist will be celebrated has the proper decorum and reverence” the statement detailed.

The Archbishop advised no church is obliged to recommence its normal duties unless and until it has the needed logistics and put in place the requisite measures to ensure the safety of parishioners and adherence of the government’s directives.
