Appiatse Explosion: 17 dead, 59 injured – Ministry of Information confirms

The Ministry of Information has confirmed that a total of 17 people have been confirmed dead in the Appiatse explosion, in the Bogoso District of the Western Region.

According to a statement released by the Ministry, as at 5pm on Thursday, 59 other persons have also suffered various degrees injury in addition to the 17 dead.

The Ministry says, government has activated a National Emergency Response Mechanism following the incident. Personnel from the Ghana Police, Fire Service, Municipal Authority have moved to help the distressed community.

The injured are now receiving treatment at the various hospitals in the municipality.

The unfortunate incident, the Ministry says, happened after a truck carrying explosives for a mining company got involved in accident with a motorcycle and another vehicle at a place close to an electricity transformer.

The explosion has reduced the town of Appaitse to rubbles and debris, killing inhabitants and injuring others.

“An alternative route has been created to facilitate the movement of stranded vehicles plying that route. All hospitals within the vicinity are being used to treat injured persons, and an evacuation plan has been activated to move those in critical condition to medical facilities in Accra so they can get the needed assistance,” the Ministry said in its statement.

To prevent what they describe as a secondary explosion at the site, the statement indicated that a joint team of police and military explosion experts have been deployed to examine the situation and put in place requisite measures.

“We would want to urge the public to remain calm and obtain regular updates from the national emergency response team. At 11:00am tomorrow, the emergency response team will provide updates from the scene of the incident,” the statement announced.

Also, the government has commended the Police Service, Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Health Service, National Ambulance Service, and the Municipal Authority, health professionals in the medical facilities within the vicinity, and local residents for their assistance so far.

“Government further expresses deep condolences to the families of the deceased and sends best wishes to the injured for their speedy recovery. As relief and containment efforts continue, and the situation is brought under considerable control, President Akufo-Addo will visit Appiatse to assess the effectiveness of the response effort,” it concluded.
