Akufo-Addo administration has failed in its fight against illegal mining (Galamsey) in the country, according to a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party, Kennedy Agyapong.

The Assin Central MP observed that Operation Vanguard and the task force set up to clamp down on illegal mining activities are rather taking advantage of the poor supervision and weak system instituted to enrich themselves. This has made it very attractive to many soldiers and personnel of the security services.

He says the current situation makes mockery of the President’s desire to stop the illegal activity and streamline the small-scale mining industry.

Kwaku Asomah Kyeremeh, Lands and Mineral Resources Minister, in September last year, disclosed that the government has chalked an enviable 85% success rate in its fight against the menace.

The legislator entreated President Akufo-Addo to, with an immediate effect, stop the operations of Operation Vanguard as well as Galamstop.

“Galamsey, we have failed as a government. President, I respect you but you have to immediately collapse Galamstop and stop the operation vanguard operation. They’ve become very wealthy it is now like a United Nations Organization, they fight to get into Operation vanguard. Why? what do they get

“I have evidence, I know many soldiers who have come to me asking me to help them get into operation vanguard and I keep asking them what it is they have seen to make them want to get in by hook or crook,” he said in an interview with Net 2 TV, Monday.

In addition to halting the ongoing strategies in place, Kennedy Agyapong further suggested that anyone who has oversight responsibilities of the two operations must be called to order, alleging they have disgraced the President as well as the New Patriotic Party.

According to Kennedy Agyapong, if these pleas are not headed to, the NPP is likely to lose seats in four (4) Regions where the activities are rampant.

“President, we are pleading with you, your Galamstop has failed. They are seizing people’s machines it’s not good. They’ve disgraced the President, the people that are in charge. The people that are in charge of Galamsey have disgraced President Akufo-Addo and it is sad. Immediately he has to stop everybody including the Minister.

“They’ve disgraced the party. The President had good intentions to move because when you look at the natural resources being destroyed, water bodies, forestry, but when they [operation vanguard] go, they look for money. My new year message and a plead, otherwise, there are four regions Galamsey is in operation and we will lose all the seats. I’m very worried. They’ve turned the operation into a goldmine, all the gold they’ve taken ask them where the gold are, all the machines they’ve seized, they sell them within two weeks,” he added.
