President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has interdicted an official of the Bureau of National Communications of the National Security Council Secretariat, for allegedly leading an assault on a soldier recently.
The embattled officer, Gerard Nana Osei-Tutu and his team allegedly assaulted one Warrant Officer Class One Mashud Salia of the Ghana Armed Forces around Tulaku Junction, on the Ashaiman- Akosombo highway on November 25, 2020.
The reason for their action is yet unknown.
But a statement signed by the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah today said the President is disappointed with the conduct of Gerald Nana Osei-Tutu, and has therefore instructed the National Security Ministry to commence a full investigation into the incident.
The Minister said “The military constitutes a key layer in the country’s security architecture. Any infringement on the institution and its officers will not be tolerated.”
Meanwhile, on Monday, the Director of Public Relations of the Armed Forces, Colonel Eric Aggrey Quarshie, strongly condemned the attack on WO1 Mashud Salia and promised that the perpetrators will be brought to to book.
He said investigations have already commenced into the matter, adding that a high-level meeting has been held over the issue and an apology has been issued from the Ministry of National Security to the Military.
“This bizarre incident has been roundly condemned by both the Ministry of Defence and the Military High Command. The Sector Ministry of National Security has also, in a similar vein, condemned the actions of the personnel involved,” he said.
According to him, a durbar was also held recently with the troops of 1 BN and all ranks were assured of thorough and swift investigations to ensure that that anyone found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Colonel Aggrey-Quarshie said the officers and men have therefore been admonished to remain calm and professional in their conduct going forward.
