The minority spokesperson on Communications, A.B.A. Fuseini, has heaped praise on former Electoral Commissioners of Ghana, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan and Charlotte Osei for their display of independence and fairness to all political parties.
A. B. A. Fuseini noted the two during their time at the Commission refused to bow to pressure to work in favour of the governments which appointed them into office.
Unlike Dr Afari-Gyan and Charlotte Osei, A.B.A Fuseini believes the current Commissioner Jean Mensa is being controlled to do the bidding of the Akufo-Addo administration so far as the compilation of a new electoral roll is concerned.
According to the Sagnarigu MP, Jean Mensa is fixated on compiling the new register in order to shortchange the NDC by removing eligible voters from the existing register.
The NDC has mounted resistance to the compilation of a new register for the 2020 general elections.
They also challenge the decision to use the National Identification card and passports or witnesses as evidence of citizenship.
Speaking on Pan African TV on the back of the EC’s announcement that the process will start in June, Mr Fuseini argued that the current EC boss does not have full appreciation of the mandate entrusted her.
“Madam Jean Mensa doesn’t appreciate the role trusted on her. She doesn’t know the difference between peace and conflict in this country is a subject matter of what she does or what she doesn’t do. She doesn’t appreciate that.
“That is why today I say we miss Dr. Afari-Gyan . We miss even Madam Charlotte Osei because they did their work diligently.
“Under the ages of Dr. Afari Djan, we changed governments. He never kowtowed to the NDC when it was in power so when President Rawlings was president and NDC lost the election in 2000, Afari Djan declared it as such. He never took anybody from the voters roll. He didn’t go to massage the voters roll and say that in Ashanti Region, it’s specific to an NPP stronghold so let’s remove 600000 people from that roll so that their numbers will reduce and go and put 1 million other people in the Volta Region or in the Northern Region so that NDC numbers will go up,” he said.
