President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in consultation with the council of state has granted amnesty to 794 prisoners.

This, according to the Presidency, is an attempt to “mitigate the dangers posed by congestion especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic”.

A statement signed by the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patrick Darko Missah, said 772 of the prisoners are first offenders, 16 are very old, 4 are seriously ill while 2 of them had death sentences, which have been commuted to life imprisonment.
