The new decade in the scheme of things of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) has already begun on an interesting note with the release of an exciting 2020 award nominees’ list.

Albeit the last decade ended in a controversy with a brawl between two Dancehall artistes, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, the scheme appears not to have suffered any setbacks as this year’s awards night promises to be explosive with many surprises with several keen contests to look forward to in the various categories on the night.

One of such categories is the Artiste of the Year category. As it stands now, the late Ebony Reign remains the latest awardee of the category as there was no winner in 2019 chiefly due to the fracas on the night between the two, arguably, leading Dancehall artistes in Ghana.

The 2020 contest is now among:

The Artiste of the Decade, Sarkodie

2019 rapper of the Year, Medikal

2019 Highlife Act of the Year, Kuami Eugene

Sensational rapper and singer, Kofi Kinaata

The 2019 Gospel Artiste of the Year, Diana Antwi Hamilton.

There was fireworks the last time a gospel artiste, Joe Mettle was made winner of the category, as many thought he was not deserving. What are we to expect this time round? Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Another interesting category which many can’t wait for is that of the Rapper of the Year. In 2019, AMG Medikal was awarded the Rapper of the Year and it sparked a controversy which subsequently led to a beef between him and former Sarkcess Music Label Signee, Strongman who claimed he had been shortchanged because he was not even given a nomination.

Interestingly, the ‘rivals’ find themselves in the same category this year. Strongman, again, meets his former boss, Sarkodie. It is particularly going to be a crucial battle with the presence of the following heavyweights:

EL                                                                            Strongman

Medikal                                                                                Sarkodie

Teephlow                                                            Eno Barony

Kwesi Arthur

With the ban of Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale from the race, it may be conveniently said that a hurdle has been removed out of the way for many in the Reggae/Dancehall category.

This year’s competitors are as follows:

Ras Kuku- Me Mpaebo                                  J. Derobie- Poverty

Epixode – My Resolution                              AK Songstress – Stamina

Jupitar- Top Shella                                           Article Wan- Reggae

It cannot be belaboured the Female Vocalist of the Year is going to be intense with Adina, Efya and Becca in the contest. The nominees are:

Adina                                                                    Lamisi

Efya                                                                       Efe Grace

Becca                                                                    Celestine Donkor
